Emanuel's Hope Restored
Church of God Inc.
Jamaica, W.I.
Est. 1988-Present
The story of Emanuel's Hope is one of divine calling, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.
Bishop Leonard Percival McIntosh and Mother Phyllis McIntosh received a divine call to plant a
church in Devon, Manchester, Jamaica. This calling was later confirmed by a prophetess in St.
Ann, who gave him a word from Deuteronomy 2:3: "You have compassed this mountain long enough:
turn you northward." He obeyed, leaving his hometown of Mollison with his wife and family to
begin the work in Devon.
The church's early gatherings took place in the home of Deacon and Evangelist Sydney Gowdy as
Devon Gospel Hall. He later received a word that there should be a name change. The Restored
Pentecostal Church of God was established with many people contributing through sacrificial
offerings. The Devon property was donated to the organization by Mr. Eric Davy and thus the
community saw first-hand miracles of healing, limbs expanding and souls receiving Christ. Pastor
V. Bailey was appointed as the Pastor of the Devon Location. After Pastor Bailey migrated out of
Jamaica, Pastor D. Smith was transferred by the organization from the Hibernia location to the
Devon Location.
The Chudleigh Church was built and the first leaders appointed were Pastor Cowans and wife. After
the departure of Pastor Cowans, Pastor D. Dunkley was appointed by the organization as the
island Overseer. After the departure of Overseer D. Dunkley, Pastor M. Cohen was installed by
the organization in 2024 as the Pastor of the Chudleigh location.
The Maidstone church and later affiliated with his group of churches under the leadership of
Pastor Calvin Smith. After his departure Pastor Johnson. The Yonderpond church in Manchester and
The Heathfield church in Saint Elizabeth built by the organization are doing community service.
Bishop Nehemiah Uriah Brooks and Mother Melda Icilda Brooks, who founded the Apostolic Faith
Mission beginning in their own living room at Zinc Shop, Spalding, Clarendon. Under their
leadership over thirty (30) churches were established throughout Jamaica including: Christiana,
Warsop, Castleton, Wakefield, Spanish Town, Milk River, Greenwich Town, Heathfield & more). Most
of these churches were financed by Bishop N. Brooks ginger farming.
Mother Ida Lewis and Deacon John Bennette were founding members of the church in Spalding. The
church appointed Pastor Winnifred Brooks-Grant, and later Pastor White to carry on the church.
Pastor B. Reid was installed as Pastor at the Spalding location.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Bishop Sturley Brooks and his wife Marian had migrated with
their family in 1977. They established Emanuel's Hope Baptist Church in Orange, New Jersey,
before relocating to Montclair. Minister Pearl Gowdy played a vital role in shaping and
strengthening this ministry.
A significant milestone took place at 159 Carroll Street, Brooklyn, NY, where Bishop Nehemiah
Brooks, Bishop Leonard Mcintosh, Bishop Sturley Brooks, and their wives met to plan the formal
incorporation of their ministries. It was decided that Emanuel's Hope in New Jersey would serve
as the headquarters for the churches in Jamaica. The union of Bishop Sturley and Marian Brooks
in 1967 became a prophetic symbol of this spiritual alliance. In honor of their fathers vision,
the next generation humbly accepted the baton and the responsibilities that came with it.
At age 80, Bishop Leonard McIntosh felt led to build a church in Hibernia, a vision that came
with great challenges. He personally requested Bishop Sturley and Marian Brooks to lead the
charge. Emanuel's Hope rose to the occasion-raising funds, purchasing land, and constructing the
sanctuary. On July 26, 1998, the Hibernia church was dedicated. Overseer Leonard Mcintosh
continued serving faithfully, managing the church business affairs and shepherding the ministry.
On September 27, 1988, the churches were officially incorporated under the names Emanuel's Hope
Baptist Church, Inc. and Restored Pentecostal Church of God, Inc. At a later date with the
majority vote by the Executive Board there was an amendment to the name which now reads
Emanuel's Hope Restored Church of God Inc.
In service to Emanuel's Hope in Jamaica: Overseer Orville Smith, Overseer Clive Reid and the late
Overseer Desmond Dunkley served faithfully.
After the departure of our founders: Bishop Leonard McIntosh, Bishop Nehemiah Brooks and Bishop
Sturley Brooks,
Minister Marian Brooks was consecrated and now serves as the Presiding Overseer and the Bishop.
Her goal is to continue the vision of establishing the churches through Biblical teaching and
church building.
